MITCH WAS RIGHT!!!!!!

banghead

We had a lively discussion this Saturday at the Club meeting.

Discussion was relative to the moisture resistance of 2K primers/epoxies. In other words catalyzed products.

Mitch was of the opinion that they were impervious to moisture. I differed.

I contacted my paint rep. from BASF, he contacted the chemists/engineers.

Consensus was Catalyzed-2K primers ARE impervious to moisture.

They are not UV resistant, therefore not recommended for permanent exposure to sun.

That means we can use these products on interior panels, and those not exposed to sunlight.

If we want to store a part for a long time inside, we are good to go!

More to follow!

Thanks MITCH!!!!!!

You were correct!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!thumbsup

Karl

I wasn't sure, and you both had good points. Thanks for the clarification.

Yes, thanks for digging into that Karl. Big relief is right, as everything I was told by the SPI paint man was that it is impervious to moisture. NOT UV resistant isn't a big deal with parts stored indoors, as you pointed out.

The really cool part of the SPI epoxy is it hardens to handle-able in 12-24 hours but does NOT need sanding for a top coat up to 7 days. After that, it is fully cured and will no longer chemically bond with paint and needs to be sanded.

We learned something on our end, both my painters agreed with me.
The best part of these exchanges is we always learn something.
Once again, Club meetings and other interactions are definitely worth the price of admission (membership)

I would much rather be wrong and learn something!!

Thanks again for hosting and being a great club member.

Maybe you can show this to your bride to prove you are not ALWAYS wrong!!!!
