I've been getting the rollback road worthy for the past week. It needed a LOT of attention from age and sitting. The right rear wheel cylinder was completely blown and drenched the shoes. Instead of trying to dry them out I replaced them, and nearly every other component in the drums. The gear lube in the hubs was black and metallic, so I pulled the rear cover to change it. Not a pretty site in there either. The rear pinion bearing must have failed some time in the past and got ground up. There are gouges and dents in the cover and housing. The bearing is still MIA ??? apparently it was never replaced and the truck has been driven for some time like that, so I cleaned out the housing, glued the cover back on and pretended I didn't see that for now. All new flex hoses and master cylinder along with the 2 hoses that power the lift cylinders. I replaced 4 rotten tires and balanced all 6, replaced the pitman arm and greased the front end (19 fittings ). It's pretty much ready to hit the road and move some cars to storage.

So, I haven't been just screwing off but I have been neglecting the Chevelle. This week will be dedicated to getting that body back on the chassis.

Yep, the brake line, bleeder and cylinder bolts are up in that little space..banghead

Had to remove the backing plate to change the cylinders.

New hardware and adjuster kits along with a new park brake cable and wheel seals and it's ready to go back together.

2 of the new tires went on the steer axle. The 2 old ones are on the insides.

Yuck... I always hate dealing with 3/4-1 ton rear brakes it is always such a mess of gear lube.

 

Are we going to be able to hire your services once it is rolling again?

Doing these brakes are just like the Pete, only in miniature and the drums don't weigh 100 lbs..whew

It is printed right on the fender " not for hire"..wink5.gif.wink5.gif

John, a lot of the parts in my 292 came from Tom Lowe.

After the brakes were done, the hydraulic clutch master cylinder went out, so had to replace that. Doesn't that sound weird ??? clutch master cylinder...headscratch

I painted the left fender,had new placards made to avoid the DOT and new stickers on the wheel covers.

I needed it out of the shop for other things and didn't want to plow around it all winter in the driveway, so it got backed into the woods for the winter.

Outstate and out of state enforcement can be a little "edgy"
Got stopped on I-80 in Iowa by a bored smokey.
Suburban and trailer both in shops name.
Multiple questions regarding purpose of trip, whether there was income involved.
Was going to Oregon to rescue the Biscayne wagon I still have.
Fortunately I had a copy of the cashiers check in my name to seller.

He grumbled and said he was doing me a favor by not ticketing me for no ICC registration.

I hear ya on DOT laws. Everything I own is in my personal name. I shut down the corp a couple years ago, after I sold the Pete and road side maintenance tractor/mower there's nothing left of it.
The one thing I'm not confidant with is the commercial Y plate. That can draw unwanted attention. I will keep a copy of the title in the glove box.
I tried to register it in the collector program but they claim I can't haul anything with it then. I haven't clarified that with the State Police yet.

I pay taxes on personal Mileage, goes on my W-2 as income.
With Truck and trailer belonging to Shop is expands the liability coverage, an provide some personal insulation.
Still carry personal substantial umbrella.
