I got a funny little noise that has been bothering me.  I am almost sure it is coming from my M20.  I only hear the noise under certain circumstances.  No noise in first or second gear.  Mainly happen when cruising from 40-50 miles per hour and on a level grade and in 4th.

Happens when I have almost no throttle on and traveling 40-50 mph,  if I just slowly add throttle I hear kind of a wine from the transmission,  if I add more throttle it goes away.  Also when I am traving at 55 mph or more no noise.

This is the only time I hear the noise.  Seem there is no noise when the engine is putting very little force on the transmission to noise when there is a little force, then  back to no noise when engine putting a lot of force on the transmission.   Noise goes away as soon as I push in the clutch.   Is this a common problem in the M20?  I started noticing this noise this past spring.   It was rebuilt by George Kramer in Lakeville a few years ago.

Absolutely noise when giving the car a lot of throttle.   Should I pull the transmission ? Could it be something else? Any opinions?  Thanks

Jim,
Those M 20, 21 and 22 transmissions were and are noisy gearboxes. I always thought that was half the fun of driving them. I say stop over thinking it and enjoy driving your awesome car. They make noise that's what they do, your trany will probably out live both of us.
Don't waste your time pulling your trany, spend it fishing or hunting.

Put louder mufflers on, that noise will disappear...thumbsup

Since it doesn't seem to be making noise under power, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

But, if you are looking for a winter project, I guess this would be one.

As one who has broken many transmissions, I agree. Let it go. If it gets worse, it doesn't take long to rebuild it later. Or use this as an excuse to change to a five or six speed.

I would not pull the trans for that noise, I don`t think the trans is the cause.

Do you get the noise in 3rd gear at that speed? If there is a bearing or gear causing the noise you would hear it more  in 3rd and also as load increases.

I would check driveline angles, front and rear ujoint operating angles should be as close as possible to equal.

Noise can be transmitted into the trans from the drive line with improper operating angle.

You did have the rear axle out last winter didn`t you? If the pinon angle has changed for some reason that will affect the operating angles.

Very little if any noise in 3rd.  Noise goes away completely as load increases.  Noise is only noticeable when in 4th with no load. Just a little more gas creates the noise, more gas or load and noise goes away.

I put in a different axel housing last winter. I suppose different housings could change pinion angle.  Last time I checked before the change I had about 1/2 degree at the pinion and the transmission, if I remember correctly.
