Pinion Seal Replacement
Permalink

It appears I have a pretty good leak in my pinion seal. I picked one up and started researching the job. There are some tips and tricks out there but I would rather run and somebody here who has done this. If I can mark it well enough, maybe check the current torque to get the nut back on right where it was would that work? Anybody want to help as I don't currently have a garage I can work in?

Thank you!

I installed 3 before getting it not to leak.  A well known guy on TC helped me out, by saying the current replacements were not correct and if you install them as you would think they would leak.  Don't know if anyone else had the problem.  He said to put a 1/16" shim behind the  metal lip, so not to tap it on all the way flush with the carrier housing.  If you do that the lip will no seal up with the pinion shaft.

Fill the cavity of the seal with high temp lube,  clean the pinion splines rear good and slop a little TRV on them so oil doesn't leak though them, put a chisel mark on the pinion flange and the pinion shaft end to get the flange on in the same position.
