Chris P brought his step-dad's GTO over today for a tail panel install.

He had already removed all the other parts and drilled out a number of spot welds. Didn't take long to wreak havoc on it...

I first clamped a brace across and then tacked it on so the quarters can't move.

Hard to see, but I drew a line across in yellow to cut off the end of the trunk pan.

Next up will be to cut a piece to fill in what was cut off and fit it all together. The initial fit of the panel is very close.

Both quarters had rust holes that were not repaired well in the past. I will cut them out and put patches in them too.

Nice work Mitch!  Another case of it doesn't look that bad until you get into it, but you are fixing it the right way IMO.

I remember seeing that GTO at the St. Peter show a couple of summers ago, and it didn't look bad then, but it will be better now!  tiphat

Mitch it's hard to see in the picture, did you put new metal on the for lack of a better term 'trunk extension'? What fills in the gap that's there now and is that the fuel tank vent tube?
Nice work how much more are you going to do? Looking forward to seeing the completion.
Chris, is that the same car I saw when I returned your engine test cell, that you built the engine for?

 Dana brought a sheet of 20 gauge with and I cut out 2 strips to fill the gap created by cutting off the ugly stuff. Probably won't get to welding anything until Thursday.

Yep, that is the vent tube. I'll try not to get any sparks down it....hyper

I wasn't thinking sparks, I was thinking what a odd place to put the vent tube. I would have expected it to be just inside the right inner fender area, maybe its safer there.

 Yes that is the car you saw when you dropped off the test stand.  This is the last big thing that he wanted to do on the car and than hopefully he will drive the crap out of it.
