Anyone know for sure what the standard ratios gears were in a 64-72 GM manual steering gear? Are there any other ration options for the stock manual gearbox??

Not sure about Chev, but Pontiac had a quick ratio manual that was much better than the 16 or 18 to one I have in my '66. I think the quick ratio in my '67 GTO is about 12 to 1. My '66 takes almost half a turn just to change lanes...rolleyes

I thought I read somewhere that the stock ratio was an incredibly slow 26 to 1.. I wonder if there is a 20 to 1 ratio. or something that could be swapped into the stock case?

manual steering info is tough to find.

Maybe contact Jim Shea? He has published a lot of info on PS gearboxes, but very little about manual.
I believe he was an engineer at Saginaw and might be able to answer your questions.

I wonder if this is a direct bolt in swap from a power box.

Yes, it is a direct swap. You will need the pitman arm too, as they are NOT interchangeable.

I just checked with Lares, in Cambridge. They have the 16 to 1 as the fast ratio. They don't spec the standard but I think you are close to right. It think standard is 22 to 1. I was backward in my first reply.

My 66 chevelle service manual list 24:1 for chevrolet and chevelle and 20:1 for chevy II and 16:1 for corvette for the manual steering gear.

I list overall ratio as 28.2:1 for chevrolet, 28:1 for chevelle, 25.4:1 for chevyII, and Fast 17.6:1 or Road 20.2:1 for corvette

It has different ratios for PS.

I think  that on a 66 chevelle, that besides the gear box, the coupler set up and flange on the bottom of the steering column are different.

Ive been told now that the standard ratio is 24 to 1 and all of the overall ratio differences were in the pitman arm, idler arm, and steering arm lengths.. so there are no other options for this box.

OK Aparently there was an N44 option on 67 to 69 Camaros that offered a 20 to 1 ratio... I bet that gearset is as rare as hens teeth.

 http://www.partsconnect.co/laresweb/default.aspx

Lares lists a 16-1 fast ratio manual gear box for a 1972 Chevelle. When you open the link, fill in the product for steering gear, year, make, model.

I don't know if this will work for a manual box or not; but it worked for a 66 ps gear box.

I took everything except the pitman shaft  and gear box cover from a 97 jeep grand Cherokee gear box and put it into a 66 chevelle ps gear box housing.  So now the ratio is 12.7:1 with more effort.

I would think there are situations like this that would work for a manual box.

Don't know if this is true for a manual gear; but power steering gear, Lares generally uses the three mounting hole case, cheap and easy to find.  I think they have the 4 mounting holes case; but for more money.

I have been toying this idea also. Going down the track gets a little hairy at times. Plus my pump is always leaking. I hate it sometimes. I was going to put Hydroboost brakes in but changing my mind of that after putting together and installing little electric vacuum pump.

1972 Chevelle Power steering to manual steering usig PN 1276 16:1 Fast ratio; Manual Gear

This was quoted from Paul Lares
Rebuilt PN 1276 is $262.50 plus a refundable core charge of $75.00
New 1276 (part# 11276) cost is $288.75. The Steering Coupling Assembly
PN 200 coupler is $39.99.
Manual pitman arm get at Rockauto. (maybe able to get all parts from Rockauto not sure hav eto check it out)

Hope this helps.
