I am planning to swap out " smokey" , the 1968 307, in the next week.  this is a complete, running engine, minus the starter. This engine burns or leaks a quart every hundred miles, so it is no good for anything but a core, unless you know something I don't.   2 bbl carb, externally regulated alternator - all the stuff nobody else wants either. The good news is that I am willing to give it away, or take a few bucks for the hassle, to someone who might need it for a '68 restoration.  

 

I will also have a Muncie (I believe) 3-speed transmission, with bellhousing and clutch.  The synchros must be new in this thing, because you can downshift into first easily and without any whine .  Again, I'd just like this to go to a good home, so hook me up with some beer money and take her away.  There is no shifter with this trans, as it was "in the tree" on the car.

If the transmission is a Muncie (heavy duty option) it may have some value. It's more likely a Saginaw (standard with low-HP engines).

What part number is cast into the bellhousing?

I have managed to find only the side case casting numbers on this three speed, and the internet is not much help. It says "GM4 3858892", and beneath that "HT 35". Pretty much Greek to me. If anyone is interested, let me know.

It has also been painted, so it is difficult to tell (without a magnet) whether it is an aluminum or a cast iron case.

That number you posted 3858892 is the casting number for the side cover of a Saginaw 3 speed.

I'm not surprised that it is a Saginaw. So: who needs a good saginaw three speed? Bueller? Anyone? (sounds of crickets...)

Thanks Stan! That was the Craigslist photo, taken in sunny California. The paint job is LOTS bumpier than it looks in the photo, but what can I say? Love conquers all. I thought it was Marina Blue, but the code says Danube blue, and the paint job appears to be somewhere in between the two.

There is nothing like an old ragtop. This thing has prehistoric brakes that would make Fred Flintstone laugh, steering that is like throwing a pizza plate across your lap, and a shifter that is pure guesswork, but I can't stop grinning when I drive it. Ahh, the wind in the place where my hair used to be!

Price reduced to ZERO for anyone who can make use of a 1968 307 block and a Saggin' (aww) three-speed. These guys are gonna be taking up precious room in my shop in a couple of weeks, and I would like to see them go to a good home.
