Low budget makeover

This weekend concluded this fall/winter's low budget makeover. I spent about $600, and I think it looks quite different. I started with removing the white stripes on the side, which was covered in a recent newsletter. I did a basic clay bar and buff using Liquid Lustre to help bring out the red. Then I picked up a non-functional cowl/SS Goodmark hood from a former member for $100. My painter at work shot it semi-flat black. I picked up the vinyl top from Auto City Classic and Mark from Yellow Dog Upholstery did the installation. I finished reinstalling the mouldings today. I haven't rewashed it or shined it up since the buffing in January or so, but it looks a lot better than it did.

I also built a new cold air intake tube. I got a section of 4" aluminum and 2 45 degree pieces off the internet, plus a section of 4" to 4" connector. 67SS donated a perfect 90 degree ABS plastic corner piece and long cone K&N air cleaner. The tube runs across and down THROUGH the wheelwell to the air filter which hangs below, behind the bumer area. No more sucking radiator or header-heated air anymore. I painted it Rustoleum Hammertone. That's probably the best looking thing under the hood now.

That really changed the look of the car in a sinister way.  Awesome!  thumbsup

It kind of startedw I swapped from the white interior to black (thanks Mitch), then I swapped from Torque-thrust wheels, got a pair of shorter springs from Derek, and the black vette Rally wheels from Mike (OscarZ). Once I did that, the white top had to be done. The new hood was a convenient addition, but set me back a little from getting to top done.

In the top picture background you'll see my next little project. It's also a product of GM.

Nice! Black on tops of the fenders would be a cool way to tie the black hood and black roof together... Mopar and Ford both did black hoods from the factory... I wonder why GM never did???

I looked at doing the trunk too, but then there's the strip of red on the filler panel between the back glass and trunk. Then if I do that.......... the sides of the quarters need to be black to match the now-necessary tops of the black fenders, plus the top edge of the doors and than also below the 1/4 glass. Then I'd smoke out the 1/4 windows too. I don't have a "large can of worms" opener for my empty wallet yet, but I do like the idea of that though for when I eventually get to paint. Maybe even then re-add a bodycolor accent stripe or something back onto the hood at that point.

yup, it will be the before for a little while longer.

By the way, does anyone know a good (and legitimate) graffiti artist?
