Yeah... to do the floors right, the body had to come off, then the frame was right there so blast and coat that, then switching to disc brakes so do that when reassembling, then the bumpers are bad so replace those... and on and on and on.  I thought it could turn into this, but it just makes sense to do it now while it was all apart, then I know what it's got in it.

And as Tim has tought me... rust never sleeps, and if it's lurking, it WILL come back so better to get rid of all of it now or repair it again in 2-3 years.

Bruce, it's tucked away inside Maaco paint jail now.  They said 3-4 weeks, so that means 6-8 weeks in real time... so I'm looking forward to the smell of fresh paint in the man cave sometime in May. 

Tim, I don't think I can compete with COPO hand painted bolt heads on your '69 at any show!   beers

MAJOR progress happening at Maaco!  nana  Stopped over at lunch today, and saw all the work that's been done.  Only surprise so far is the drivers side key lock opening had been bondo'd at one time since it was ground out too big for some reason, but they knew of a door that they could cut out the original opening and patch it in. 

Otherwise, things are moving along nicely!

We put the 'Malibu' emblem on the fenders, and noticed that they looked too far forward, but realized the engine size numbers weren't behind it.  So, I'm going to have to get the '350' that goes behind even though it was originally a 307 car, it will be accurate:

?? Is it just the color of the material, or is there a reason to use a yellow primer surfacer (as opposed to gray, red, gray/green)??

 To me it looks like that is a 2K primer for blocking. I see in Kevin's pictures they are spraying a light guide coat on top of it. The 2K doesn't really matter what color it is if it gets sealed before the basecoat.

It's amazing what the change in a basecoat's color can be depending on the color of the sealer.

Stan are they going to seal the car before the basecoat?

Yep, that's the 2K poly primer for block sanding.  Tim, I believe they do apply a sealer on top of that, but not 100% sure.  I'll check next time I talk to them.

FINALLY getting a warm enough day today to push the engine/trans/headers outside for painting so that I don't have to build a booth to prevent orange and aluminum color overspray.  Been waiting for this day for a few weekends now!  nana  Pics to follow.

Took advantage of the nice weekend and painted the engine, trans, headers, and some misc. parts.  Then introduced the engine and the trans to each other and cleaned up most of the shop.  Took most everything out and mopped the floor then the thunderstorm hit an hour or so ago.  Had everything back together, so all was good.

Yes, it's waiting for the next stage, so no updates this week.  They are going to paint the jams, underside of the trunk, edges of fenders, etc. next week, then final sealer, hang the fenders and doors, and call me to come over for the final QA check.  So, hopefully it goes to paint week after next. 

In the meantime, I'm doing little stuff to get ready like sand/paint the steering column, clean up the console and replace a broken panel in the rear, paint the seat brackets, etc.

I drive by MAACO twice a day and keep looking to see if it ever sees sunlight in the parking lot. I can't wait to see it all blue again and to put it up on the hoist to look at all the detail you put into the bottom. Great 50th Bday gift to yourself.

The vert is still in paint jail, but hopefully it will move forward this week.  They are going to paint the jams, underside of the trunk lid, sides of the hood, etc., then hang the sheet metal and call me over for the pre-paint qa check.  Then on to paint plus 3 days for color sanding.  I'll be happy if they get the jams done and call me for the pre-paint check this week at the rate it's moving.

In the meantime, I'm continuing to clean up and paint misc. parts and getting things ready. 

Put a little detail into the steering column after I disassembled the lower section, cleaned up and lubed the bearing, shot a little rattle can paint and re-assembled it.  Cleaned up and repainted around the ignition key where 40+ years of keys banging against the paint.  Then cleaned up the steering wheel and it's all back together:

Paint jail makes for idle hands, so decided to try a tip from Dashboard and brighten up the tail light housings by tracing the gasket opening shape and masking with a cardboard box lid:

Then I mocked up the exhaust to get a feel for what I need to do.  I bought two ball joint flanges that will go in front of the mufflers so that I can drop the front section at the collectors, so the whole H pipe section will drop out if needed:

Now if I just had the vert back to put this stuff on...  rolleyes

Well... it's been 11 days since my last post, and now... it's in the booth!!!  nananananana

At least for painting the door jams, hood/fender sides, and underside of the trunk lid.  Those should be painted now from when the pics were taken a couple of hours ago, then hanging of the sheet metal tomorrow or Monday, then body paint, and wet sanding.  Another big step today.  party

I'll stop over in the morning and take some pics of new blue sheet metal.

Yes Scott, it's hard to sleep knowing it's getting close, and how much work is ahead of me putting it all back together!  hyper

But... parts are becoming blue!  nana  We love the way the color came out, and you can really tell from the trunk lid underside how it flops on itself with lighter and darker transitions.  They were supposed to hang the sheet metal Friday, and then go to paint Monday or Tuesday latest, then on to color sanding, so depending on how that goes, it could be the end of the week and she goes home!

Wet sand after baking, so ready for pickup either end of the week or first of next, then re-assembly begins!  nana

It would be done by the end of the week, but I added some work.  Just think along the lines if Chevy made a 'Malibu Sport' model....  Finally landed on a 'theme' for the project.

O.k.... 'old blue' is getting closer to her new self!

I'm VERY pleased with how the paint came out, and the guys at Maaco were impressed as well.  The base coat with 3 coats of clear is very deep looking, and laid out nice and flat.  I love how the shades change depending on the angle and lighting.  The clear coat went on very clean with just a few dust particles in it that will be wet sanded out.

Might be ready for pickup Friday, but probably early next week.  The guys at Maaco have been awesome towards the end of this process, and the result has been worth the wait.  See for yourself:

Not necessarily correct for the convertible body, I had them put the seams in the back deck because most verts crack in that area when there isn't a seam.  I saw a 2 year old restoration on a '72 Buick GS last year that already had cracks there since the body tends to flex in that area.  So, hopefully this will help:
