I haved to change my power steering pump on my '69. Current pump and bracket appear to be maybe be out of a 70-72 car. Unfortunately I am out of state on family matters and can't post pics right now. To the problem: I thought the end of the power steering shaft holding the pulley on had a nut on the end. My pulley looks to taper and extend out from the center and has an allen screw, probably 7/16" in the end. Has anyone changed a set up like this that could advise how the pulley is secured to the shaft and how do I remove it? Thanks. Jon
If it does not have the nut holding the pulley then it most likely is a press fit. There is a tool for pulling and installing the pulley. I would bet you could borrow it from Orielly's but if not I have the tool and you are welcome to borrow it.
When you get home look closer inside the end of the shaft there should be threads in there for using the tool.
Thanks Kevin for posting and all for the help. When I get home I will pull the assembly so the pulley can be worked on out of he car. I will try Orielly's first and if not then I will be making a phone call for a loan, thanks. Jon
Chris, I think he should be able to remove the pump and pulley as a unit then remove the pulley.

You can do that but you have to unbolt the bracketry off the engine and remove the pump and brackets as an assembly. However, 69 had a few things that were one year only on the bracketry so im not sure but often times, the bolts that actually hold on the pump itself, are obstructed by the pulley.
I find it easier when working with the pulley removal tool. To just have the pump secured on the engine. Otherwise it has to be secured in something like a vice.

I couldn't find a stock replacement ps pump and learned there is a company in Cambridge, Lares Corporation, that builds and rebuilds steering pumps of all kinds. I took my pump up and talked with the folks who were more that accommodating. We determined my pump was not original to the year and they are building me a correct can to go with my pump parts. Should have it in hand next week. I think you will want to keep the name of this place in your files for future reference in you don't know who they are.
We have discussed Lares here on the forums before. A few times people in the club have asked about what to do for rebuilding a pump and have gotten the recommendation of Lares several times. Its a nice little gem to have access to from the Twin Cities area, or MN for that matter.
