Kevin and I drove his Elky and my Chevelle to Shakopee Friday night, and the ball bearings in the washing machine noise in the trans/engine area was more than just once in awhile on the way back home. Did it at almost every light/stop. Every time it happens I can make it stop by putting the trans in neutral and letting the clutch pedal out. So, it's something that's still spinning when the clutch pedal is pushed in.
I was going to just drive it this summer since it wasn't making the noise all the time, but now it is most of the time, so back on the stands it goes.
After having the trans rebuilt, about the only thing left that could cause this is the throwout bearing and/or the pilot bushing. The TB is the only thing spnning other than the flywheel and clutch assy. I'm going to pull the trans for the 4th time in 8 weeks (including pulling the loaner that Bungy loaned me) and replace both parts.
That better take care of it or it's either going to sit for a long time or go to the professional trans shop.
I think it's been on stands this summer more than I've driven it! AARGGGGGGH!

Jesus. If it werent for bad luck. You wouldnt have any luck at all.
Seems to be the story with this car. Maybe it's time for a color change so that I can blame it on being a green car!
The MOST frustrating part about this issue is that if it is the TB I've had that darn thing in my hand every time I've pulled the trans! I 'should have' just gone ahead and replaced it the first time I pulled the trans as insurance, but I took the TB to the trans shop and they thought it looked good. It's one thing to check it by hand and another thing with the actual forces of being pushed against the clutch...

Oh no not the stands again, plus now we have a crossover X pipe. Can we find a lift?
I rethought using someone's lift... and I'm going to put it on stands (along with other support this time ) and buy the jack trans lift plate from Northern Tool. By the time I rented one a couple of times, I could pay for one. Plus, I have a feeling this isn't the last time I'll use it...
The other thing I'm afraid of when using someone's lift is getting it all tore apart and finding out I bought the wrong TB or running into some other unancitipated issue! I'd rather disassemble it, compare the new TB to the old to make sure the height is the same, and then put it back together on my own schedule instead of worrying about stranding the car on someone's lift.
I'm buying a direct replacement TB from Summit and a HD version from O'Reilly's. I'd rather use the HD one, but I need to compare it to the old one first (I can't find a spec sheet on the Borg Warner TB).
The Xover pipe is behind the trans tail shaft and out of the way. I made sure of this when installing the exhaust. Shouldn't be an issue.

After being in your garage this afternoon wouldn't air conditioning be a nice upgrade?!?
That's what was sitting in the corner. We recently replaced the HVAC unit in our house, and it's going to get installed in the man cave. Including the AC unit!

Boy, I hope I don't have your luck this weekend when I go to swap motors in my friends 69 chevelle. I hope the motor I just put together stays in one piece and makes it to car craft and back.
Well... with the hopes of not jinxing anything... the noise is gone!
I had Lakeville Trans put in a new throwout bearing and pilot bushing, and that seems to have taken care of the problem. I drove it from Farmington and in stop and go traffic tonight for half an hour, and so far so good.
When they tried to take out the old pilot bushing, a 5/8 bolt was tight enough to not go into the new one, and it was sloppy loose in the old one. We are guessing that the input shaft may have been banging around in the pilot bearing causing the noise. The old pilot bearing that was in the crank came with the motor when I bought it last summer, and is one of the few parts I didn't replace with new during the install. I guess it shows you that a guy should always replace all the necessary parts when doing this kind of thing.
So now I have a freshly rebuilt trans and the experience of removing/installing the trans multiple times under my belt...
Tomorrow night will be the real test in the Lakeville PanOProg cruise!
Next time I'll trust my instincts and replace the inexpensive parts as insurance!
