Tried the 3M Vinyl repair kit on a fairly large tear (sorry on true before picture).

There was a l shaped rip with hard curls on the edges.  

Per the instructions they were trimmed off and then the hole was reinforced with fabric provided and filled with the based material.

Allowed to dry overnight (4 hour minimum) and clamped it to help it be flush and proceed with the black (multiple colors are provided for mixing to match).

The color is cured using a hot tool and gets a grain from the paper provided. It is heated using a iron (might want to ask first or stop by a thrift store).

At ~4 feet it is hard to see and a big improvement for ~ $8 (at Walmart, better than on line costs) for the kit. happy with the first try and sure next time would go a bit better.

If you are looking to try this there is a video on line that explains the process. Would be happy to share with anyone from my experience

Here is a very close up. next time i would use a touch less filler and a it more black.

Looks good Bruce.  If I remember right the convertible panel is hard to replace and I'm not sure anyone makes new ones.  Luckily on my vert the back panels were in really good shape, so I didn't have to do anything to them.

I did find a place that sells just the sewn covers and then you reupholster/recover.
Seems like a phase two item at this point.
