Hey All,

I put up a thread on garage journal on my garage build.  I will be updating it there because I have friends and family that want to follow it as well.

It looks like your project is well under way. I'm looking forward to seeing the updates. Will you periodically post to this thread when there's new stuff on your "Garage Journal" thread?

Will do when I do pics. There will be some back and forth over there. I am sure the experts will be chiming in over there. Seems some people are harsh and everyone is an expert, but since I am very much NOT I hope to get some help there too. You really have to trust your contractor and that can be tough.

I am surprised by the thickness of the floor too. Seems 4" is standard but since there is no rebar, maybe they need that to hold it together. The other thing I noticed is no anchor bolts for the bottom plates ?? Are they planning to screw them into the concrete ?

Construction methods change all the time and I'd be shocked if what they are doing doesn't meet code. They need to please the inspectors, if they want to stay in business.

I have 6" deep concrete in my shop but I also have a LOT of 1/2" rebar to hold the weight of the truck when I parked it in there. I actually parked the truck and loaded end dump in there a number of times that weighed 80,000# and have no cracks.

Mitch. They are using Fibercreet as opposed to rebar over the core. They did three rows of rebar on the footings. The bottom plates are coming, but the are screwing them in like you said because they are putting in additional foam around the foundation and footings 2' all around. Then three layers of green treat board. The inspector signed off on the plans and seemed fine with everything. He commented that we went really deep on the footings and like the fact the contractor put in class five packed instead on just backfill. No semi's. But I know that it is not a question of if the cement will crack, it will be where.

Thanks Tom for posting the link to GJ!  thumbsup

Glad I could help 'push' your project approval along by moving away and being mentioned in your post!  beers  Welcome to the world of construction... sounds like you are already learning a lot, and I saw you already have some feedback on GJ.

My only other advice is never move after you built it... I had a 'moment' in my old shop the day the movers came and I was sweeping it out for the last time.  Lots of great memories left in there with you and many other NCC folks and friends.  It really hits a guy when you lock that door for the last time.  You'll enjoy it tremendously, and will make many great memories with buddies and cars.  Wish I were there to help you break it in.

The last free advice is never move after you build it unless to a place with an even BIGGER garage like Dashboard!  I spent the past weekend building over the garage door storage for all the stuff that was in the 20 X 24 ft. shop + 8 X 12 shed + the front 2 car garage.  banghead

Dammit Stantsktsk. Lump in back of throat reading this.  Had to go and hammer something....

I think some of the most fun had to be playing on the slanted pool table!  At least it gave me a chance.  So far so good on the build.  Weather look good Saturday at least For them to continue building.

Going to Hastings this weekend for the show.  Will make fun of that guy that brings his Mazda and those trophies In your honor..nana
