Efficent and safe removal of undercoating... what worked for you?

I am at that point that I need to figure out how to get the underside of the car cleaned to bare metal. Ive heard that blasting wont penetrate the factory undercoating very well and need to know how you guys have done yours and what works and what doesn't.

Scaler? Heat and scraper, chemicals, someone for hire?

I start with just a scraper. After this many years, a lot of it is loose enough to scrape off. If I need to remove more stubborn stuff, mineral spirits will soften it, or if it isn't a lot and you're impatient like me, brake cleaner dissolves it quickly and wipes off with a rag.

Anyone ever hear of Dry Ice blasting? There is a place in Elko that rents equipment..

I found a place that does the dry ice blasting out of Elko, MN... They are a mobile company and the estimate on rental of equipment was $500 for the unit for the day, about $400 in dry ice and you need about a 50 horse screw compressor .. He said he thought to have them do it might actually be a push as far as price.. He explained that the screw compressor puts out about 100DB .. Probably not the greatest thing to have running in a residential neighborhood. So total on the estimate was $800 to $1000.. Id love to try it .. Its just not in the budget.

I would say 1980 is a good figure to go by... I found this in a research paper..

"Ninety-eight percent of asbestos consumed in the production of asphalt-based undercoating are chrysotile fibers, and constitute less than 10% of the total volume of the material . Application and removal of asbestos containing sealants are considered relatively safe due to the affinity asbestos fibers have for petro-based chemicals. Asbestos fibers directly bind with the asphalt component of the sealants, and become suspended in the matrix . Liberation of independent fibers is believed to be limited, and does not represent an occupational health hazard."

Im wearing an organic vapor mask now matter what.. I cant believe sucking in any of that dust is good for you.

Tony skip the Ice Blasting it may work but unless it is the same unit as I used to use forget it. You need HUGE AIR supplies for that thing and a few containers of dry ice. A heat gun and scraper will do a lot in short time. It took Mike and his brother a day with a heat gun followed by the wire wheel on the Chevelle.

Looks like the roto worked just fine and the blasting cleaned up the underside...thumbsup
