Need Help on Odd U-joint at rear of driveshaft on 66 SS
Permalink

I have an odd U joint at the rear.  At sometime, someone replaced the rear tube yoke as it is NOT  the standard 66 tube yoke.  I think its an original driveshaft and the front tube yoke and slip joint yoke are of the standard 66 type, which uses a non grease-able   3010 u joint, with outside clips  for both set of bearing caps, 3.218 outside diameter for both axis, and bearing caps of 1.062 diameter.

The rear u joint has a 3.622 outside diameter for one axis and a diameter of 3.218  for the other one.  One set of bearing caps is held by the U bolts and the other is held by inside clips.    The outside diameter of the bearing caps held by the U bolts is the standard 3.218.  The  outside diameter of the bearing caps axis held by the inside clips is 3.622. Both sets of bearing caps are the standard diameter of 1.062

Cant seem to find a u joint  of this type.

I have an empty NAPA box in the shop for that conversion joint that I needed for my '70 Chevelle. I'll see if I can find it and get a part number.

Looks like you have a 1330 tube end and a 1310 yoke.

Kind of except that the bearing caps on the large end, which is the tube end  are held in by inside  c-clips,  there is no provision inside the tube yoke for snap rings.

The joint that is in the yoke now actually has provisions for inside clips on both axises.  It just that the 1310 end is held on by U bolts and little tabs that are plat of the pinion flange.

I haven't taken it out yet, so don't know for sure there are no provision inside the tube yoke of outside snap rings.

The number that I have from the '70 doesn't match up to what you have.

I also have a conversion u-joint in the '66 and it is too short thru the diff yoke and vibrates. I probably need the same needle you are looking for...headscratch
