A buddy of mine sent me this, and it's ironic that I lived from 1972-1977 just 30 miles from this small town in NE Nebraska!  Cool story.  Time to head up there in Sept. for the auction!

A small-town Midwestern dealership in Pierce, Nebraska sold Chevrolets to local families and first-time buyers for 50 years until it’s husband and wife team finally closed their doors seventeen years ago. Since then, a staggering inventory of 500 surviving cars, new & used, have been stored away, undriven for decades. Some 50 cars “brand new” Chevrolets from the 1950s and 60s have less than 10 miles on the odometer.

Ray and Mildred Lambrecht are now in their 90s and have made what is described by their daughter Jeannie, as a “a difficult and painful” decision, to liquidate the dealership’s massive inventory of ‘survivor vehicles’. Lambrecht Chevrolet Company opened in 1946, at a time when cars sold for around $600 to $800. It was owned and operated by Ray and Mildred Lambrecht with just one employee, a mechanic. “My parents worked six days a week for 50 years, never taking one single day of vacation or one sick day,” remembers their daughter Jeannie. “They worked hard and operated their business with honesty, integrity, and kindness, frequently lending a helping hand to others who were in need …This was a small ‘mom and pop’ operation, and it stayed that way throughout the decades in business.”

While all the new, unsold stock were stored away in the warehouses, many of the dealership’s trade-ins were parked on the family farm outside of town which gradually grew into a massive collection. “There is a lot of history in that collection,” explains Jeannie, who says her love of Chevrolets is in her DNA . “Dad can look at any of those vehicles today and tell you the story behind it. He remembers each used car and the former owner, like the 1928 Durant owned by Mom’s uncle Louie.”

“Unlike today, one special day in September of each year was the first opportunity for anyone to view the new car models for that year. New cars would be delivered in advance and then hidden away so that nobody could see them before Announcement Day. Early that morning, Dad would move one shiny new Chevrolet into the showroom. There would be balloons and banners, coffee and donuts, souvenirs, and lots of built-up excitement. Everyone in town would come to see the new car and truck models.”

What is realistic...

$70K, $100K  for a BRAND NEW - NEVER DRIVEN - ZERO OWNER, fifty-year old classic??

BJ brings 2x that for "100 point" restored. These cars are untouched... (probably completely useless mechanically, but UNTOUCHED for 50 years).

Like "Antiques Roadshow"... they'll bring $$$ for whatever the collector/gotta have it market deems necessary to own - and totally F-up us "regular enthusiasts" trying to snag a classic restorable for a reasonable price.

 Yup. This thing has been posted everywhere for over a month now. Way over hyped and will certainly attract a big crowd, many of which probably have deep pockets and are willing to spend way more then any of those projects are realistically worth.

They'll bring whatever they're "worth" on that particular day. They won't be cheap, but where would you find another one?

Most of the cars are common plain vanilla cars of the era, but their "new" status and the history attached to them can't be duplicated.

VanDerBrink may be lousy auctioneers (I've heard a lot of stories) but they sure know marketing!

The Cameo, '62 and '63 SS's will bring huge money. Like Derek said, much of the rest is nothing special except for their very existance as never sold or driven. Most of the stuff out at the farm has been reduced to rusted out junk and will have limited vaue as even restorable projects or parts. The hype is definately around the cars in the building and will most likley bring out some deep pockets. I would certainly like to own the '62 409 car but my account will come up a "bit " short...rolleyes

It would be fun to do the "inspection" process before the bidding...thumbsup

You have to remember too that with that volume, there's only so many deep pockets that can buy. Some will hold their money waiting for the end, some will jump on the first ones, and everything in the middle will probably be reasonably affordable for what you're getting.

I was also thinking what the indoor stored cars will do to the restoration & original crowds...

You now have an indisputable baseline of how a particular plant built a car. There's NO argument if this or that "is correct or not". I'd fathom a guess that these cars will become the standard to which others of same make/model will be judged.

Key word is realistically. I just dont see big bucks being spent on a bunch of 4 door tri-fives. The Cameo will be interesting to see where it ends up and the 2 door Impalas.

I don't know... if the four door tri fives are low miles, someone might pay $20-25K just to have a cool cruiser?  dunno  Take that times 10 cars, and it starts to add up.

But I'm not up on tri five values either.

There was a lot of talk about this auction when I was in Iola, WI for the big swap meet. There's a good chance I'll be going down for this with some buddies from Iola. I'll just be looking and taking pictures. No illusions of buying anything.

One of my buddies is very good friends with a guy who owns a 58-64 Chevy parts business. He said he's going down and buying some cars and parting them out on site. He's got hotel reservations for a whole week. He said he's running up the price on certain cars he wants. He has very deep pockets and said if he doesn't get the cars he wants, whoever does is going to pay "big time" for them.

My wife's uncle called me tonight from Nebraska, and wondered if I'd heard of this.  He told me there was an article in the Lincoln Journal Star last weekend about the auction, so I checked it out:

Craig let me know if you need any tips on that part of Nebraska as I lived about 20 miles from Pierce for 7 years as a teenager.  You might want to look at finding a hotel in Norfolk about 15 miles or so from Pierce.  That's where I went to tech school, and it's about 25K people, so a few hotels to choose from.

You and 'spot' have a good time!   razz  Wish I were going with you...

 I was just looking at them. 63-64- and few 65 C10's with less than 10 MILES on them and they're basically junk. They were left sitting outside and need total restorations. What a waste !!!

The '63 Impala is over 17k, the 64 Impala hardtop and the Cameo pick up are at 26k and the Indy Pace vette is over 36k. This with 8 days left for fools to run the price into the clouds.

The '62 hardtop I wanted is in rough condition. The price right now is fair but you can bet that will change.

Wow, what a waste.  The '71 Chevelle looks like it's completely trashed.  The '69 was probably OK until a building roof collapsed on it.

 Stan, I think this is going to turn out to be a lot of hype to generate high prices on cars that don't deserve it. It's all marketing. There are a few choice cars that are still nice but most were left to rot outside and are no better than vehicles that were driven for years and need total restorations. They are pushing the envelope of "survivor' way too far for a vehicle that is nearly destroyed from neglect and the elements.

After seeing the pics and descriptions, I've pretty much lost interest in this.

Hmm so much for a snow loaded roof falling on it. The Aqua '65 Impala on the first page looks to be in decent shape, but it's already at $18,000.

I'm not impressed with the auction's website at all.  It doesn't load properly, and the pics and descriptions of the cars are off centered.  Maybe it's because there's so much activity on it.

I'm also not impressed with the cell phone quality pics or descriptions of the cars.  Seems like they had some grade school kid do it?

I guess the cars will sell themselves though, so not much interweb help needed.

Kind of like the description of the 69 chevelle. Its a great candidate for restoration, here's your chance to own a survivor. Once you restore it, its not a survivor.

Thanks Bryan.  Will have to DVR it to see all the hooplah.  I figured somebody was going to pick it up for cable tv.

Mitch, I understand and agree with the '3 ring circus' approach being taken with this one.  They are making it out to be the motherload of barn finds, and it is for a handful of cars, and that's it.

DVR is set.  It starts at 7 p.m.-10 p.m. on the History Channel.

My sister in Nebraska texted me last night, and the rumors in Norfolk, NE (about 20 miles from the auction) are that Jay Leno and John Travolta are staying in hotels there to go to the auction.  I'm not surprised.  The auction will be a circus...

Mitch is correct, they have done a wonderful job of marketing, and it has world-wide attention.  People are commuting great distances just to be there,  I’d like to have the concession rights to sell the hotdogs and sodas that guys going to make a year’s wages in two days.   Some nice cars but most not so nice...How’s that go……one man’s junk is............

It does  seems the bidders have deep pockets however.

No one watching the results ??The Cameo sold for...........drum roll.......

$140,000...clonk

In looking at the winning bidders, something is really suspicious to me. ONE person bought 16 of 21 cars on just one page of the 10 page auction, totaling 591,000 dollars. If this were ebay, I would think "shill bidder"...tsktsk That same person bought most of the mid sixties pickups that had sat outside and the average price was $20,000 EACH. It appears "they" spent around 1 MILLION dollars today and that doesn't include the buyers fee...

There must have been a few guys that knew what they were buying.  Maybe not the gal from Australia on the 57 chev.  I thought the guy from out east that got the 65 impala 396 knew a little about the value.

I saw the 66 malibu 4 dr hard top went for around $4,000, I think. If the frame and front clip were in good shape maybe with the engine and trans and other parts it would be worth that on salvage.

 

The guy with the marines shirt that bid on the 69 chevelle, thinking he was going to be using it for parts?  Maybe he was going to do a switch of engine, drive line, frame, and tags?

I was there on satuday with Spot. all those mid 60's c10 were ROTTEN you could not tell the diff between those and any other vehicle that had been outside for 50+ years.....total sham who cares about less than 10 miles they are just old 6 cyclinder trucks. Someone also paid 40,000 dollars for a Corvair that had 8 miles but was outside all its life! 27, 000 for a numbers matching 69 396 Chevelle with the roof caved in, just plain crazy. I guess the economy is just fine!banghead

I think they hype was way,way overated. But thats what the media does, hype,hype,hype. The only thing that was cool was just seeing all that old iron and hangin with my buddies.

Any time you have a high profile auction with cameras, news stations, magazines, reporters, and any other media to further make it into a circus, all the more money then brain types come out with them.
