I was going to hit the gym tonight, hopped in the Chevelle and turned the key ... click click click is all I get out of it.
2 year old Interstate battery with 12.7 volts in it
2 week old starter
High output alternator pushing 14 to 15 volts
I put a jump start on it but still only clicks.
Cables and connectors all like new. Even re-seated cables on battery, I suppose I should do the same to the other ends. Battery negative to fender and block. I need to get it started to verify the alternator is putting out but when I parked it yesterday the gauge was reading 14 to 15 volts.
I could have a bad + or - cable. I could have a bad starter though I doubt it. I am leaning a little towards a bad battery so will look in to that tomorrow.
Interstate batteries are usually pretty good, but you never know until it is tested.
You can get both tested at O'Reilly's/ Advanced for free. Only bad thing is I have had batteries tested and charged by them on 3 occassions that are "good" according to the tester and 2-3 days later two of those "good" batteries were dead again. New battery and problem solved on those 2 occassions.
The starter is from Carquest in Brainerd but the reason I am thinking it is OK is I replaced it for this very behavior, slow to turn over and/or clicking. I have te ebattery out on a charge now and will take it in to my local O'Reilly's to do a load test. I also have a spare battery I can pop in there that I charged overnight but with the rain this morning didn't feel like working on it in the driveway.
Hate to admit it but I found the prpblem. I have an external solenoid that the connector on the cable that goes to the strater was loose. That is probably what was going on 2 weeks ago as well when I replaced my starter, oh well.
