sidewall to 1/4 clearance?

What's a minimum sidewall clearance for street tires? The rallys I have look to be about 1/2" maybe 3/4" at the most. My wire will most likely fit right at that lip, how much sidewall movement is there side to side on regular (not Derek/Scotty) driving?

Rubber bushings or Poly?

Does the clearance change as the suspension moves (outer-most bulge of the tire get closer than 1/2"? )

You should be OK at 1/2".

poly bushings all around. I don't have the big tire on the rim, just a shorter one. Might have to mount one up before work tomorrow as a tester, but that's a good thought to see if it shifts as it works.

I don't think the ones in the rear end housing are poly, I though we put stock rubber ones in your rear end when we rebuilt it. Your control arms I suspect are poly.

With poly bushings you'll definitely be OK at 1/2"

I used to run 15x8 with 3-3/4 backspace and about 1/4" of clearance with poly bushings and it never rubbed.

Derek is right...but I have trimmed lips on several cars too. Not a problem if you gain the clearance you need and can roll the trimmed edge back so it's no longer sharp.

Mounted one of my old tires on a 15x8 4" backspace rally this morning before work. We'll see tonight exactly how close it is. Should be fine, but I like to see for myself since I hate buying things more than once. Worst case is I only have to adjust for backspace then.

Got it figured out. It's close, but a 4" rally WILL still clear on my car. I think we all knew it would since lots of people are already doing it, but I prefer to see it for myself (and I'm too cheap to just buy stuff and see what happens).

Straight on shot-265/70R15 on 15x8 Rally with 4" backspace. 1969 Chevelle rear end with a pair of Derek's cast-off rear springs and Southside Machine bars:


it's close, but clear:





The car actually looks to sit up more in front than back, though I'm not looking to drop that. I can leave well enough alone (for now.....)

By the way, alst night I was loitering in my garage doing nothing and decided to see how far up the front really was since it looks like it sits higher than the back.

IT'S DEAD ON LEVEL!

I measured on the center of the roof as well as the pinstripe line and both were full bubble within the lines on a 4' level.
