So I had all new 2 1/2 inch head pipes, cut-outs and mufflers put in last year. However, I did have my existing tailpipes installed to save a few bucks. They measure about 2 1/4 inch but seem a tad smaller than that where the tailpipe joins the rear of the muffler. They are nice pipes with chrome ovals tips welded at the end (thanks again Stan).
Would there be any real benefit in trying to open them up to 2 1/2 inches? Would it make it any deeper? I don't think so because of the smaller opening of the oval tip. I don't need to do so for racing as I uncap the cut-outs.
The other reason I am considering changing a good thing (dumb, I know) is the tips are receased in about 4 inches from being flush with the rear bumper. Because of that I get exhaust crap on my valance panel and would like to extrude that tip out a bit which I may be able to do myself. Maybe.
I would change the pipes for the soul reason of keeping the soot from collecting on the back of the car. Not for any potential gains in sound or performance, I dont think you will notice much in that aspect.
Do you have tips or is it just the end of the pipe and thats it? If you dont have the factory tips that were on the SS cars, adding those would make up the 4 inches and likely take care of them being set back too far. Preventing soot from gathering.

Dear Optimist, Pessimist, and Realist.
While you guys were busy arguing about the glass of water. I drank it!
I just took another look at the welded on chrome oval tips at the end of the tail pipes and it appears the pipe is inserted in the chrome tip at least 4 inches ... so, I should be able to grind that weld off, pull it out 3 or so inches and re-weld it back on!
OK obviously I didn't make it to the meeting, so I'm still butchering my shins on these damn pretty aluminized tailpipes with their fancy slash-cut chrome tips.
They aren't going anywhere (unless someone wants to come out an pick them up, in which case at least one beer comes with them, if you'd like. And not just some weak-ass PBR or Grain Belt either- we're talking at least a Bass or a Guinness).

Yeah.........I was wondering what happened there. Do you have rafters to hang them in till the next get together ? Are you going to the Feb meeting ?
I'd like to go to the Feb meeting but my pal Scott (who is with me at most events) is in the middle of his project car now, and I'm committed to helping him out. It's a Malibu, so it's okay. It's a 76 wagon we're going all crazy on and it's down to a bare shell now. The new chassis is being fabbed up and our weekends are pretty solidly booked. The plan is to have this car at Car Craft 2013 with its full cage, glass clip, 700 horse LS, T56, 9-inch, slantnose, etc. It's taking up a lot of our time for all the right reasons. It will probably end up black with burgundy interior and accents.
Oh ya..tailpipes! I'll try and make it out to a meeting but if you get lost or something and end up on 169, you can pick them up anytime. They're tucked behind my wagon, which isn't going anywhere til spring.
