I have a question on a fender mounted antenna for a 1970 Chevelle. I have a original passenger fender that has a factory reinforced opening for a antenna on the fender. I see that the windshield antenna is actually listed as an option but I don't see any 70's with a fender antenna. Can anyone shed some light on the fender antenna as far as what models may have had them or any thing else that someone may know about it?
My recollection is that certain models , such as the sedans, didn't have the hidden wipers and they had the fender mounted antennae. I'm pretty certain all the Malibu and SS models had the hidden wipers and windshield antennae...
Tim, I have a copy of Paul A Herd’s, Chevelle SS Restoration Guide. The book gets mixed reviews from the guys on TC; I find it correct more than not. He clearly states that for 1970-72 “all factory-installed radios used the Hidden Radio Antenna. Dealer installed radios use the antenna mounted outside on the right fender.”
I also have the GM dealer Chevelle, El Camino ordering information for 1972. Under Radio Equipment it lists all the different radios AM, AM/FM, AM/FM Stereo and includes a note “Includes concealed w/s antenna”
Having said all that, we know that on any given day anything could come off the production line. Parts availability was a factor, they never stopped the production line. Dealers fixed a lot of production line issues back then, remember the time 1969-1972 lots of drugs and drug testing was something that had not come about yet.
Thanks guys. The puzzeling thing is that the fender is original to the car and it also has the antenna connection in it for the windshield. It is a complete Barn Find type of car with a neat story behind it. I know it is the original fender because it's been in the family since it was new. It was parked in a building years ago when the engine quit and was forgot about until it was time to sell the property recently. There under a pile of stuff sat the car.
I guess it will stay as is with a fender antenna. Don't know what I'll do with the car yet maybe just fix the engine and keep it as is.
If the windshield has been replaced, they might have gone with the antenna one vs the non-antenna style. When I replaced my w/shield, it was quite a bit cheaper to do that.

The windsield antenna hookup in the firewall looks like an original as does the fender. I wonder if they had a blank off bezel for the fender that was used? It is a big block 4 speed non power steering and non power brakes car. Much like my 70 400 BB car.
