How do I recondition a 12 bolt cover so pitting doesn't show so much?

I had a rusty pitted 12 bolt cover I picked up to go with a spare 12 bolt housing I have that didn't have a cover.  I cleaned the paint off and soaked it in muric acid overnight and all the rust is gone.

Just wondering how I can recondition it so it pitting on the outside is minimal to the eye.  I have allready primed it with an etching primer and put a couple of coats of high build primer on.  Do I just keep adding more coats of primer until it is somewhat smooth?  Thanks.

That's what I would do, or skim coat it with body glaze. If you paint it with satin or semi gloss that will also make it less noticeable.  Is it real bad or are you being real fussy?

Not that bad. I was thinking about a little body glaze/putty. Guess I'll keep going with the high build primer until it runs dry. This is just a spare cover for my spare axel assembly. I guess I just have to much time on my hands. Looks like it might be nice enought this weekend to take the car for a run to the dairy queen.

As long as you're sanding the primer off the rest of the cover and leaving it in the pits, it will eventually level out. I would use the body glaze once and be done with it, myself.

Wish I was that bored from too much time on my hands...

Will try the body glaze the next time.  I think a couple of more coats and it will fill in.  If I were as handy as you, I would probably take on a project.  Those fenders are looking good.
