The Body is off the 57 Chevy!

j I took the body off the 57 Chevy the other day and started work on the frame.  Cutting off motor mounts, rear suspension mounts and clutch brackets. Friday I started putting in the spring pocket kit for the rear suspension which moves the springs from outside the frame rails to centered on the frame rails. I can put up to a 12" wide rim now if I do a mini tub. A mini tub is not seen from in the car as it does not change the rear seat size.  cc

I forgot to mention a coworker and myself bought a body rotisserie. He has it first for his 69 Camaro. My body will be soon as he does not have much to do. The body is very nice. It took about 6hrs to set up and put the Camaro body on.

Yes I used a cutoff wheel on a die grinder to cut in pockets and not the frame in back. The parts you weld in all come in a kit. It all works well

I finally recieved the new rear frame cross brace on Friday and welded it in today. Should be mostly done with frame welding and mods. Just have transmission crossmember to do next year and maybe a few brackets for e brakes and regular brake lines.
a

The new rear end is on order and hopefully will be here in the next two weeks. I went with a 4" narrowed F%%D 9" with 3.90 gears and 12 bolt chevy ends for my disc brake kit

Did you have a good rear end that you took out? I think Chad M is looking for one for his '55.

We are not putting a stock rear end back in chad's 55. Looking for a 72-75 nova 10 bolt rear end.

The car came with a 67 olds 8.2 rear that had a welded up spider gear special in it. It went into the scrap bin and is now probably made into a Ford by now.

I got my rear end on Monday. I will have to post some pics. I am trying to adapt my 12 bolt brake kit to a Ford 9" with 12 bolt ends. I think it will fit.

Sent two emails out for Transmission quotes. No response yet? Not sure how long that will take from each place?

Here is a pic of the new rear just setting on the springs and also the new rear frame piece.

I order the six speed today plus the Mast cam kit for my motor, Dougs headers, trans mount, Quick Time Bell housing, and some brake parts.

I ended up getting rear end form the rod shop display you and I stopped at during Back to Fifties.

Priced about $200 less for the same product. The rear end is built with Currie and Fab 9 components. Fab 9 is now owned by Currie.

Just was told yesterday also. Lakewood bought out Quick Time bell housings. All Lakewood bell housings are going to be made at Quick Times factory according to their standards. So Lakewoods products will be alot better

The transmission, bellhousing, cam kit are here. The headers, trans crossmember and brake stuff comes next week.

The Trans come in the most heavy duty cardboard box that size I have ever recieved. Must be 3/4 to 1" thick.

Some latest pics. Everything fits. The headers are a tight fit thats for sure. About 1/4" to the steering box after some mods to the box and frame. About 1/16 at most to the knock sensor on block.

Brad, I like the old skool color and flame on the drivers door.  You should leave it as is and have a nostalgia shoe box/rat rod theme!  biggrin

I will probably just do the Por15 thing again on the frame so in case I need to weld on brackets later during the build for like exhaust, brake lines, fuel lines etc I can just touch up with a brush.

my wife has suggested I leave it primer so I am not so worried about paint and who and what parks next to me.

I ended up staying at home on Saturday to wait for Fed Ex guy to bring radiator. Signature in person deal, they were supposed to hold it at depot so I could pick up in time to come to meeting, but they still had on truck. I was planning on comming to meeting if not for that. I am in the parts collecting mode now as its to cold in garage now. I will probably wait for pics until I get fuel tank next week and include that also.

I have a "salamander" heater you can use. It runs on kerosene, which is spendy, and it stinks, but it heats well.

I thought your garage was already heated? I could have sworn I seen electric heat there before.

Been getting in the garage a little this spring. I have the cam kit in the motor and plan on taking it Friday to the Engine place for a computer reflash, dyno tune and a custom wiring harness. Its Supposed to make about 480 hp. Cams pretty mellow for a fairly stock 6.0.

Thinking about 2 weeks before I will know results. I need to call and check on getting my front frame horn straightened. Then snadblast, paint and final roller assembly.

Do you have a place to get the frame worked on ? Centerline Frame in Vadnais Heights is really good with that.

651-487-9492 ask for Dave (the owner)

I will keep them in mind. Thank you for the info. I will try one other place first then try that place.

I am running into problems getting a harness made for the motor, so the taking to dyno place is on hold for a week. Hopefully the one I got coming next week will work? Having problems getting one with correct VVT connection.

Brad. Is it possible to find a truck in the junkyard with a good enough wiring harness to get? Why not use a factory harness instead of a 1000 dollar aftermarket harness. Then tune with a laptop.

I am taking the frame to Andover Wheel and frame tomorrow. Said no problem to do.

The factory spot for comp is on the fender,  a poor and ugly place for a classic car, good for service though, so a junk yard wiring harness would be just for the connections and you would have to make your own on everything else. A aftermarket one is a total plug and play. Has fuses in it and 42" extra lengthoff back of motor to put bains in the car along with the wired throttle pedal. I am guessing on a junk yard one that maybe on a different harness? I am looking for less problems down the road also. I not a big electronics wiz either and would not have a clue on tuning the motor.

Brad. I was thinking you could do like what John D. did and just grab the entire wiring harness off a donor. Even though he got the wiring with the donor. You could grab a full wiring harness off another vehicle.

That 57 looks good! That would be easier then what I am doing!

I finally got my motor to Schwanke for tuning after waiting for wiring harness that seemed to get lost in shipping. It took 13 days to get from NJ! The shipping label had those dates on it.
My frame is still at Andover Wheel. I took a my rad core support and and filler panels in for powder coating. I hoping to be picking up alot of stuff next Friday! results and pics when I get them.

Bolted ls7 flywheel and clutch to motor. First time I had saw a stepped flywheel and clutch. It has stepped tabs on outside for the mounting surface. I should snap a picture
